Last winter, my skin was in shambles. Literally. It was my first winter and I don’t know how to process my winter skincare routine. So I just kept waiting for the dreary winter to pass so that I can finally figure my skin out.
Well, I did. If nothing else went my way in 2019, one thing was for sure: my skin THRIVED! It was literally popping. I found the right product to tackle hydration as well as hyperpigmentation. I also finally got into chemical exfoliation which was the whipped cream on the cake.
When Autumn finally came, I was so scared for my skin. I almost began to panic. I wasn’t looking forward to the winter that will undo all of my hard work over the past year. But eventually, I had to calm down and give myself a pep talk of sorts.
What is the worst that could happen? Dehydration? You have quite a number of essences and you can always buy more. That shouldn’t be a problem.

Well, the pep talk worked. When I noticed the leaves started to turn yellow and the temperature dipped, I began to restock all my skincare hydration essentials. I did not want to be left hanging especially since I ordered all my toners and essences from Korea. A few got to me before the winter and I had enough to use for both my AM and PM routine. After the first few weeks of winter, I started skipping my PM routine because it got so good. Eventually, I stopped it altogether but will get back to it before Spring.
If you’re unfamiliar with my current skincare routine, I use a modified version of the 10 Step Korean Skincare Routine. I’ve been doing this for over 9 months and it has been working for me. I cannot possibly see myself using any other routine right now.
So how have I been able to bounce back from dry dehydrated skin to hydrated glowing skin during the winter?
Here’s my current AM Winter Skincare routine
I’ve been using the Neutrogena Hydroboost Water Gel for over the year now. It’s my staple cleanser with Hyaluronic Acid that keeps my skin cleansed, supple and hydrated. Plus it works for all the seasons. I realized that I didn’t need to change my cleanser during the Summer. It worked just fine.
My staple toner is the Klairs Supple Preparation Facial Toner but it finished before Autumn and I thought I should try some sample toners before restocking. So I ran threw two travel sizes of Innisfree Green Tea Toner as well as the Innisfree Jeju Lava Seawater Toner quickly. But right now I actually use the Hanskin Hyaluron Skin Essence to tone because it is so hydrating. I realized that regular toner was not doing much for me because I wasn’t doing my PM routine anymore so I had to switch things up.
At the point, if you include my toner, I currently layer three essences every morning: Hanskin Hyaluron Skin Essence, Cosrx Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence and Innisfree Jeju Lava Seawater Essence. These essences are usually layered after The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid which keeps my skin as hydrated as possible.
The most important serum I use right now in my winter skincare routine is The Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid. I thought it was going to have an adverse effect during the winter. But I have learned to use it properly so the change of seasons did not matter.
Followed closely by The Ordinary Alpha Arbutin which I use for my hyperpigmentation. I formerly used The Ordinary Ascorbic Acid 8% + Alpha Arbutin 2% but just last month I introduced The Ordinary Niacinamide 10% + Zinc 1% to my routine so I had to drop the Ascorbic Acid for the Alpha Arbutin + HA. According to a Deciem recommended skincare routine, The Alpha Arbutin 2% should be layered with the Niacinamide.
When I still exfoliate 2 – 3 times a week, I prioritise hydration. This means that I never beat myself up for forgetting to exfoliate. I just follow my regular hydrating routine. But when I do exfoliate I use Cosrx BHA Blackhead Power Liquid as my BHA and alternate between The Ordinary Glycolic Acid and The Ordinary Mandelic Acid for my AHA.
To wrap up all these hydrating goodness, I moisturize with my Day 1 Moisturizer: The Ordinary Natural Moisturising Factors and seal it up with The Ordinary Plant-Derived Squalane. This gives me that extra glow that lasts throughout the day.
I feel like using sunscreen regularly has played a big role in clearing up my hyperpigmentation. As such, I never forget to wear it even during the winter. I’m just about to finish my very first bottle of Missha Sun Milk Essence SPF 50 + and a new bottle is on the way. That’s how much I love this SPF.
You must have noticed that I use a lot of The Ordinary products in my winter skincare routine. It’s just so convenient to buy all of my skincare from one retailer. Like I mentioned in my reviews, every two months, I buy £25 worth of skincare to sustain me. Asides that, I buy my Toners, Essences and SPF from Korea through eBay. My products last well over six months when used well.
While I have stopped my PM routine and now exfoliate during the AM, I can’t wait for Spring to get back to my PM routine. I love that extra glow my face has in the mornings after my routine at night.
