How To Plan An Epic Backcountry Adventure

When the bustle of city life gets overwhelming, a backcountry adventure is the perfect escape. It allows you to explore the wild, where solitude reigns, and your connection with nature is at its deepest.

Yet, embarking on a backcountry adventure involves more than simply venturing into the wilderness. Careful planning and preparation are also crucial to ensure a safe and enjoyable trip.

How To Plan An Epic Backcountry Adventure

Here are some ways to do just that:

  1. Know Your Destination

Start by picking a suitable backcountry destination. Depending on your abilities and interests, there are many different options you can choose from.

If you’re a beginner, you can select a destination that’s easy to access and has plenty of hiking, biking, or camping trails. More experienced adventurers can opt for challenging places like a desert or mountain range.

Consider climate, terrain, distance, and local wildlife as you compare your options. Research national parks, forest preserves, or mountain ranges, but always respect designated wilderness areas.

If you plan to stay in rentals, don’t forget to check availability chart. Many popular rentals tend to have limited availability, especially during peak season. If your first choice is fully booked, having a second or third option can save your plans.

  1. Create A Detailed Itinerary

A well-thought-out itinerary helps ensure your safety and makes your trip more organized and enjoyable.

Outline your daily travel routes, potential campsite locations, water sources, and significant landmarks.

Use topographic maps and Global Positioning System (GPS) tools for accurate planning if necessary. When deciding your daily distances, consider the time of day, weather conditions, and terrain difficulty.

  1. Plan Your Meals

Proper nutrition keeps you energized and healthy on the trail.

A backcountry adventure often requires packing light; thus, go for dehydrated meals, which are lightweight, easy to carry, and simple to cook. Never forget high-energy snacks for on-the-go fuel.

If you’re unsure about your meals, here are a few tips to help you with planning:

  • Consider the length of your trip: If you’re going on a short trip, you can get away with packing simple meals that don’t require a lot of cooking. Consequently, you will need more substantial grub for longer trips.
  • Consider the climate: If your chosen destination has a cold climate, you need to pack meals that you can reheat easily. If you’re heading somewhere hotter, they should be easy to cool.
  • Consider your dietary restrictions: If you have any dietary restrictions, such as allergies or intolerances, you can still tailor your options to them if you research them.
  • Consider your budget: Backcountry meals can be expensive, so setting your budget will come in handy. Luckily, there are many ways to save money on backcountry meals, such as cooking your own food and using packed meals.

Aside from these tips, you’ll need a stove and cooking gear. You should also plan for secure food storage to avoid attracting wildlife and keep meals fresh and safe.

How To Plan An Epic Backcountry Adventure
  1. Choose The Right Gear

After sorting your meals, it’s time to select the right gear to pack. They dictate your comfort, safety, and enjoyment of your trip.

And since backcountry means carrying everything on your back, think lightweight and multipurpose when shopping around for gear.

A sturdy backpack, tent, sleeping bag, and appropriate clothing are necessities. But if you’re confused about the gear to bring for your upcoming backcountry adventure, keep the following factors in mind:

  • The type of activity you’ll be doing
  • Climate
  • Terrain

Considering these factors will help you narrow down your choices. You can also use various resources, such as online retailers, guidebooks, and outdoor stores, to help you select the right gear.

  1. Hone Your Navigation Skills

Once your gear is ready, it’s time to focus on navigation, a vital skill for backcountry trips.

Learn to read a topographic map and use a compass. Familiarize yourself with the terrain through your maps before you depart.

Sometimes, even with GPS devices, traditional navigation skills can be lifesavers when technology fails.

Some methods can further enhance your skills, including:

  • Enrolling in a navigation course: Several courses are available online and offline. They can teach you the basics of navigation, such as effectively using a map and compass.
  • Practising regularly: Like many things, practising regularly is an excellent way to improve your navigation skills. Go on hikes and try to orient yourself using the landscape in addition to your map and compass.

And, of course, you can talk to experienced hikers and ask for advice. They can be a great resource for learning about navigation.

  1. Prepare For Emergencies

While excellent navigation skills are essential, you should also plan for potential emergencies. Even with a well-thought-out plan, a crisis may strike at any time.

So, bring a comprehensive first-aid kit and learn how to use it for a safe yet enjoyable backcountry and hiking trip.

Taking a wilderness first aid course to prepare for potential injuries or incidents would also be beneficial. Likewise, pack a reliable communication device, such as a satellite phone or personal locator beacon.

Start On The Right Foot

Organizing an epic backcountry adventure takes time and effort, but the rewards are worth it. You can have a safe and unforgettable experience by following the steps above.

Start laying out your plans and get ready to explore the beauty of the wilderness.
