Napping: Why You Should Do It More Often

Brits are some of the most productive workers in the world一and studies suggest that it all comes down to getting the right amount of rest. A survey by the Sleep Cycle app revealed that Brits are amongst the most well-rested in the world. The benefits of this are very evident because the UK loses fewer working days and economic output, compared to Japan and the U.S. where workers get less time to sleep.

It’s maybe not very surprising to learn that Brits value their naps a lot more than some other parts of the world. While we would all love to have £1,000,000 in the bank, a post entitled ‘Would You Rather’ by Gala Spins discovered that the average Brit wouldn’t trade their naps for the aforementioned sum of money. Naps are definitely a top priority for Brits, along with romantic relationships, friends, and even the Internet.
And who can blame them? Naps have many health benefits. Some of which we are going to discuss below.

Napping: Why You Should Do It More Often

You can maintain a healthy immune response

Whenever you get ill, the chances are you will feel a lot better after getting some rest. That’s because napping can help in preventing infections by boosting your body’s ability to fight viruses. Rest is vitally important because it can also boost your recovery time from illnesses by helping in antibody production. So if you’re feeling under the weather, allow yourself to recover by having a little rest.

It’s good for your heart

Getting some shut-eye can actually improve your cardiovascular health. So if you want to protect your heart, having regular 20-minute naps whenever you can fit them in will certainly help improve your overall wellbeing. A 20-minute nap can make your blood pressure drop by an average of 5mm Hg. That’s as effective as taking a low dosage of blood pressure medicine. Over time, regular naps can keep your blood pressure down and prevent heart attacks.

Your skin will look better

Beauty sleep is a real thing. Dr Heidi A. Waldorf states that naps are essential in preventing skin disorders. Your skin can produce acne, eczema, and psoriasis as a response to sleep deprivation. So whenever you don’t get enough rest, cortisol gets released and it wreaks havoc by causing inflammation in your body. But if you get to catch up on sleep, you can control your cortisol levels and lower your chances of getting acne, eczema or any other skin problems.

Here are some Benefits of a Good Night’s Sleep

You’ll be more alert after having a great nap

Resting for 10-20 minutes provides the body with a wonderful energy boost but if you want more cognitive power, taking longer naps will help boost your memory and learning ability. Additionally, napping for one to two hours can refine your motor skills and memory recall.

It goes without saying that napping has amazing benefits for the mind and body and the best part is naps are easy enough to integrate into your daily routine.
