How to Create the Perfect Work/Life Balance

It can seem impossible to fit everything you need to do into one day. There is the business to be done, a
house to run, kids to look after, a dog to walk, and so on. It might seem like a pipe dream to achieve the perfect work/life balance, but it can be done if you follow these strategies.

Learn to Say No

If you are the type of person who finds it difficult to say no, then the chances are you are also the person with the biggest in-tray and who is still at work long after everyone else has gone home. While it’s nice to be appreciated, it’s also lovely to create a work/life balance by learning to say no to your boss or colleagues when they want you to pick up the slack. This will give you more time to do the things you enjoy and have more of a life outside work.

Ask for Help

Those who shout the loudest are more likely to get heard. If you don’t shout at all, nobody will realise that you need help. If you find that your workload has too much for you and you can’t achieve a healthy work/life balance, then don’t be afraid to ask your colleagues or boss for help. You may feel nervous about doing so, but at least you won’t get buried by all the work piling up.

How to Create the Perfect Work/Life Balance

Prioritise

Some things are more important than others, and some items can even get left for another day. Instead of trying to do everything at once, set yourself some priorities. When you get to work, list the things that have to be done that day and a separate list of things you would like to do. Work through your list in order of priority and only move on to the second list if you have time. This will help you stop feeling overwhelmed and help you create a better work/life balance.

Book Holidays

It is crucial to feeling as if you are working towards something rather than just trudging endlessly onwards. Booking a holiday will give you something to look forward to and help you not burn out at work. If you can’t stretch to a holiday, then book a spa day or a treat for yourself at the weekend instead. This will give you a better sense of doing something for yourself that is not work-related.

Take Advantage of Flexible Working

It is more common for companies to offer flexible working than ever before, so you should be taking advantage of it if you aren’t already. Ask your company what they are prepared to provide you with. Some companies are happy to let their employees work from home a few days per week, saving you the commute to and from work and giving you that time to yourself. Alternatively, altering your hours might make things easier for you around the home. It is certainly worth asking about.

How to Create the Perfect Work/Life Balance

Work for Yourself

Imagine a world in which you can do a job you are passionate about, only take on projects you want
to work on, work the hours you want to, and not have anyone but yourself to answer to. You could if
you gave up the 9-5 and became your own boss.

This may be a slightly rose-tinted view of running your own business. You may have to do some of the mundane jobs such as sorting out van insurance and invoicing if you choose painting and decorating, for example, but it will give you an outstanding work/life balance and the freedom to do what you want when you want. And anyway, the van insurance will take care of itself with a few clicks on a comparison website.

Think about what your strengths are and what you are passionate about, then consider whether you
could make it work on your own and what you would need to do. It is a big step to take, but it can
be one of the best ways of giving yourself a fantastic work/life balance and putting you in control of
your destiny.

Consider What Works for You

Think about what looks good to you when considering your work/life balance, and don’t try to live up
to anyone else’s ideal. We are all different, and finding a balance for you might be getting home a couple of hours earlier, whereas, for someone else, it might be the ability to work from the beach every day. Life is for living, and you should listen to your heart when finding the best balance for you.

Follow this guide, and you will find the right balance when dividing your home and working life into manageable portions and creating your own harmony.
