Rare Beauty Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20 – Review

This post will be reviewing the Rare Beauty Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20.

Up until now, I haven’t worn makeup in the last three years. I wanted to focus squarely on my skin, especially since I was approaching my late 20s. It’s been over three years of officially having a proper skincare routine, and the results are finally starting to show. To challenge myself, I stayed away from makeup to build my confidence in my skin. It worked! I went to work and travelled to different countries makeup-free. After a couple of years, I started to embrace my lipsticks. While I would always love lip glosses, my MAC lipsticks will always have my heart.

Like many millennials, I’ve been spending an unhealthy amount of time on TikTok for different reasons. Partially for entertainment, relaxation, and to find trending products to blog about and boost my traffic. So, I’ve unconsciously been taking notes of those viral TikTok products. Naturally, this is how I heard about Rare Beauty. First, it was that highly pigmented Soft Pinch Liquid Blush which I’m sure I won’t be able to avoid any longer. Then it was the Positively Light Tinted Moisturizer. The more I saw the skin-like finish across various skin tones, the more I was influenced.

Eventually, I found my way to SpaceNK to do a shade match. I eventually found one, wore it for four days during my last trip and absolutely fell in love. Of course, I had to come back here to spill all the details.

First Impressions of the Rare Beauty Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20

According to Rare Beauty;

Think no-makeup makeup in a bottle. Easy to throw on with just your fingers, this super comfortable, breathable tinted formula blends like moisturizer into a smooth, hydrated, naturally radiant finish.

Instantly blurs and evens out skin tone while reducing the look of pores and fine lines.

With built-in Broad Spectrum SPF 20 sunscreen plus Vitamin E, you get the sun protection you need, minus the ick of traditional sunscreens. Never sticky or greasy, your skin feels nice and moisturized.

Long-lasting coverage so weightless, it actually moves with your skin instead of settling into it. Meaning it wears evenly and you always look and feel like you.

A brand ethos I can absolutely get behind!

Ingredient List, Fragrance & Sunscreen Filters

While this product is marketed as a moisturizer, it will always be makeup to me. Yes, it’s absolutely lovely, but it has buildable coverage. Tinted moisturizer is simply a hybrid between skincare and makeup. Honestly, I’m not particular about the ingredient list, but I love how transparent the brand is.

It is formulated with a botanical blend of lotus, gardenia, white water lily plant extracts and Vitamin E and Sunflower Seed Oil.

As for the sunscreen filters, it would have been perfect if they simply made it SPF 30 instead of 20, but that means you can’t skip your SPF 50 underneath. But going with a hybrid of physical and chemical filters whilst declaring their percentages is such a boss move! They include;

  • Homosalate: 9.0%
  • Titanium Dioxide: 1.8%
  • Zinc Oxide: 0.9%

For someone struggling so hard to find a tinted mineral sunscreen that won’t leave a white cast, this is such a lifesaver. This is the first time I’ll use physical sunscreen filters that blends perfectly with my skin tone.

Packaging, Texture & Consistency

Asides from the diverse shades, my other favourite thing about this product is the consistency. I don’t know about you, but after layering three to four steps of skincare products, the last thing I need is another product that will just sit on my skin. I need any makeup whatsoever to be breathable. I don’t want to feel like my pores are all being clogged because a product is too heavy, and this is precisely what this Rare Beauty Tinted Moisturizer delivers. It’s weightless, breathable and buildable.

It’s packaged in a 30ml squeeze bottle which dispenses the exact amount you need every time. It is also portable and perfect for travel. After using it daily for almost a week, I discovered that three pea-sized squeezes are all I need for my entire face.

Price & Availability

Rare Beauty is a relatively new brand, so I was estatic when I heard they were finally coming to the U.K. I wasn’t even planning to buy from them yet. I was just excited to see Selena’s brand in Sephora, Europe. For those of us in the U.K, you can get yours from SpaceNK for £26 with next day delivery, and in the U.S, you can get it directly from the Rare Beauty website for $29.

Review of the Rare Beauty Tinted Moisturizer SPF 20

It just occurred to me that this is my first significant celebrity purchase. I can’t believe I got this before Fenty Beauty. Anyway, for now, I only use this product on my trips. I’m primarily a homebody, so you’ll always find me in my bed. But as a part-time solo travel blogger, I travel abroad monthly. So, this is the only opportunity I have to wear a semblance of makeup.

Application Process

I start with my regular skincare routine, which comprises a toner, an essence, treatment serum and SPF 50. As it is now warmer, I skip moisturizers in the mornings now. Then, I let my skincare dry down entirely because I always have a dewy finish. After which, I apply three squeezes of the Rare Beauty Tinted Moisturizer in sections. I got the shade 54N. I tried using a beauty blender, but I ended up using too much product and wasting it because it wasn’t giving me enough coverage. So, I just stick to my fingers for now. It’s highly pigmented, so you’ll need to wash your hands afterwards. Next time, I’ll try using a foundation brush to see if I like the application. But I have a feeling I’ll still prefer my fingers.

Performance

Honestly, what’s not to love?! The TikTok girls were right. Those three squeezes give me that light to medium coverage that instantly blurs my skin to near perfection. While I bearly have any skin concerns because I’ve been using the right products and applying SPF religiously, I still have old hyperpigmentation that is still fading. This product gives me that even tone that I honestly can’t wait to have when I start Tretinoin. The application is damn near flawless. As a basic girl, I finish up with my MAC lipstick, brush up my eyebrows, and I’m good to go. As a result of using many hydrating products, my skin is immediately dewy at the end of my routine. This means that my skin remains dewy most of the day, and this tinted moisturizer barely shifts.

During the day, I also realized that I could conveniently reapply sunscreen with my Shiseido Sunstick over it without any issues. I use the DHC Cleansing Oil at night to take it all off and finish up with any foaming cleanser around. Throughout the week I used it, it didn’t cause any breakouts, which honestly tells me a lot.

What Skin Type Can Use This Product?

I’ve watched a lot of reviews that say the Rare Beauty Tinted Moisturizer is better suited for people with a combination to dry skin. I have dry dehydrated skin, but I’m honestly not expecting miracles from this 30ml bottle. Did it dry out my skin? Definitely not. It felt slightly hydrating. Did it give me a matte finish? No again, as I would have hated it if it did. Again, do your research before making an informed purchasing decision. Find reviews of people who have the exact skin type as you before making a choice.

Finally

If you have dry skin and are looking for a lightweight skin tint that is breathable with buildable coverage, this product is for you. As Summer is nearly near, you’ll find this product very handy.
