Published initially on Relish Growth.

This post will share eight essential things you should do in your 20s.

People always like to say that your 20s are your prime.

Whatever that means.

But I believe a decade of self-discovery will shape you into the adult you’ll eventually become.

While self-improvement is a continuous process, there’s nothing like that initial journey of self-discovery in your teens to early 20s.

I started by reading so many self-help books in my teens.

Interestingly enough, I didn’t even know that self-help books were stigmatized.

I simply enjoyed discovering myself and finding things that resonated with me.

Right now, in my late twenties, I’m thankful for that journey because it has shaped my mindset and helped me become emotionally intelligent.

I know my worth, and I have not tied it to anyone.

I’m a confident and independent woman with a mind of her own. But I haven’t always been like this. You might be wondering how I got to this stage of being incredibly self-aware.

Well, let’s get right into it!

Here Are 8 Essential Things You Should Do In Your 20s To Become A Well-Rounded Adult.

In no particular order:

Start A Business

The most important thing I did in my early twenties was start a business.

It single-handedly made so much impact on my life as an individual. In the process, I picked up many skills that helped me land jobs later.

I mean, there’s something about doing business with older people that forces you to be mature and get your act together quickly.

You must be an adult and professional who knows what you are doing, especially if you’ll be paid for your service.

While I was much more mature for my age, it was a constant learning experience that I wouldn’t trade for anything.

I could experiment with my skills and work with companies in different industries.

So, if you need to learn essential life skills, you should start a business.

It doesn’t have to be anything grandeur.

A simple online side hustle is a good place to start.

Take As Many International Solo Trips As Possible

I haven’t even taken that many international trips yet, and I can already feel my mindset shifting.

I’ve taken about a dozen day trips in the last 12 months, and I’m convinced about the importance of travelling the world alone.

Travelling with friends and family is lovely, but nothing beats the confidence you’ll gain from taking a few solo trips.

Listen, it hits differently. If you can’t afford international trips, take regular trips around your country.

Whatever you do, just make sure travelling the world is a priority for you in your 20s.

Also, the more you solo travel, the less dependent you become on people.

It starts with travel and then shifts to other areas of your life.

Before you know it, you’re becoming self-sufficient.

Get A Consistent Workout Routine.

There’s nothing as bad as being 25 years old with back and knee problems.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t think it’s something to be proud of.

So, get in shape before age, and your body starts betraying you.

If you need to lose weight, do it already.

The more you delay it, the harder it becomes.

Get to work if you want to build muscle and improve your metabolism.

Or, if you simply want to be healthy and fit, go right ahead.

Life is about routines.

The more you do it, the easier it becomes a habit that comes easily to you even as you age.

Even if you have a family with kids when you get older, as long as working out is a routine, you’ll find time for it.

Train Yourself to Eat Healthy Food

Nothing is more shameful than a grown adult dependent on fast processed food.

It’s normal to struggle with healthy food, especially if it is not your lifestyle.

But at some point in your life, you have got to train yourself to eat healthily.

Thankfully, you have no excuse anymore.

So go on Pinterest and research healthy recipes based on foods you already like.

Healthy food does not have to be bland.

So, the earlier you commit to it, the better for you.

Plus, it relieves the stress of dealing with health and skin issues arising from eating unhealthy food.

Have A Self-Care Routine

Some people go through life without ever stopping and caring for themselves, and women are most guilty.

We go from being someone’s daughter to being someone’s wife and mother without pausing to be ourselves.

Many women end up in sad and miserable marriages because they don’t look after themselves.

Whatever you enjoy, make sure you’re taking your self-care days seriously.

It can be as simple as watching a movie or eating in a restaurant alone.

Prioritize your alone time, and don’t ignore it for anyone.

Live Alone

Still reiterating the last point, it goes without saying that you should learn to enjoy your own company.

Some women can’t do anything without their siblings or friends.

Every time they find themselves alone for a short period, they complain about boredom.

Before you get married, one of the best things you can do for yourself is live by yourself.

It might be temporary, but the process will enable you to learn new things about yourself.

It will help you become hyper-self-aware.

You also work on some of those weaknesses by learning new habits.

You can structure your life around things that genuinely bring you joy, including your routines and habits.

As a result of the absence of other people, you have all the time in the world for yourself.

I’m not sure there’s anything else that can beat that.

Get Therapy For Unresolved Childhood Trauma

Many of us are walking around with unresolved childhood trauma that we need to unpack.

Unconsciously, it affects us in one way or another, and we don’t even know.

Granted, therapy is not the most affordable service, but it is worth the investment.

So, just like you would save for a new handbag, you must prioritize therapy.

If you have to save up to afford it, go right ahead.

Unpacking that trauma weighing you down and affecting your relationships with others is worth the investment.

So, the earlier you can afford it, the better for you.

Therapy will help you improve as an individual.

As a result, you’ll become more self-aware and emotionally intelligent.

Most importantly, you’ll be able to stay clear of people who will drag you down with their unresolved trauma.

Invest In A Capsule Wardrobe For your Body Type

I feel there needs to be an award for those who don’t fall victim to the perils of fast fashion.

I mean, do you really need a new winter coat every year?

If you’re investing in quality pieces or a fashion content creator who needs clothes to create outfits regularly, that’s completely different.

But as a regular individual with a 9-5 job, you honestly do not need to buy new clothes every season just because Shein says so.

Invest in classic, timeless pieces for your body type.

Go a step further and invest in a colourful capsule wardrobe that will work across all seasons.

This way, you’ll never run out of options all year round.

Obviously, I’m not saying you shouldn’t enjoy buying new clothes for yourself.

Make sure it’s a quality piece that will last a long time.

Finally,

I hope you have found this list of eight essential things you should do in your 20s.

Honestly, being in your 20s is hard enough as it feels like you must have your life sorted.

But there’s nothing more than being well-rounded as you approach your 30s.

Your quality of life improves, as does the quality of the people around you.
