This post will be reviewing the Kikumasamune High Moist Lotion.
While Korean Skincare seems to be increasingly gaining popularity worldwide, Japanese skincare remains the underdog. It’s currently the case of only those that know, know. What a lot of people don’t realize is that a few of the brands that they use including Hada Labo, Biore, Nivea to mention a few are Japanese brands that are often mixed with Korean brands.
The first time I dipped my feet into Japanese skincare was through the Hada Labo Gokujyun Lotion. Those lotions transformed my dry dehydrated skin and are currently a staple in my routine. Naturally, I became more curious about Japanese skincare and went exploring. One of the few products I decided to try was the Kikumasamune Sake High Moist Lotion and Emulsion.
FUN FACT:
Kikumasamune is a Japanese Brewery established in 1659! Yep! They make different variations of Japanese alcohol also called Sake. They also have a Sake inspired skincare line which has become popular globally. One of the popular products is the Sake High Moist Toner.
First Impressions of the Kikumasamune High Moist Lotion
In Japan, lotions are used interchangeably with toners. So when you see a product that is described as a lotion, more often than not it is a toner. On the other hand, emulsions are also used interchangeably with light moisturizers/milks.
Overview
This is a watery toner formulated with Sake which is made from fermenting rice. The first time I heard about this product, I was super intrigued by how Sake can be used for skincare. I mean how could you possibly use alcohol in skincare? I’ve been using this toner for a few months now and I’ve been loving it.
Consistency & Texture
Like I mentioned earlier, this is a watery toner that comes in a massive 500ml pump bottle for easy application. While I sometimes enjoy using the pump to dispense the product, I generally prefer to decant a bit into a spray bottle. It’s less messy and I never use more than necessary. With the pump bottle, sometimes I get carried away because of how fast the product absorbs into my skin.
Price
Depending on where you buy it, you can get the product between $15 – $20 which is a huge steal if you ask me. Again for a 500ml size, if you use it every day, a single bottle can last up to three months or more.
Just when you think that Korean Skincare is generous with its size, Japanese skincare takes it up a notch. A lot of their best selling lotions/toners from Cezanne to Naturie come in 500ml sizes. If for some reason, you get bored of using the product, you can use it for your body as well.
Ingredient List
Obviously, the key ingredient in this lotion is the Japanese Sake or Fermented Rice. Rice is actually amazing for nourishing and brightening the skin. So, if you are dealing with dull skin and you need to brighten your complexion naturally, you can incorporate this product into your routine. I know that I have definitely noticed a nice glow in my skin since I started using this product.
Asides from Sake, this product is fortified with Arbutin which is amazing for treating hyperpigmentation and fading dark spots. Pairing Sake and Arbutin is a power combo for brightening your skin.
It’s also enriched with Glycerin, Amino Acids and Ceramides. It has a slight fragrance which I believe is to help mask the pungent scent of Sake. Even though the alcohol scent dissipates almost immediately, you really don’t want to go about smelling like Sake. So, the fragrance in this product is definitely justified.
Review of the Kikumasamune High Moist Lotion
DISCLAIMER: I feel like I need to reiterate this point just so that nobody misses it. The Kikumasamune High Moist Lotion is formulated with Japanese alcohol called Sake. Even though the scent of Sake is temporary, some people might not be able to stand it. So, please bear this in mind if you decide to purchase this product.
What I Do
As I mentioned earlier, I use this product as a toner either by dispensing through the pump or decanting into a spray bottle. Depending on how my skin feels, I use this either in my AM OR PM routine. It just works with any product with no conflicts. Plus it layers really well. These days, I layer it with my IUNIK Beta-Glucan Power Moisture Serum for my Autumn AM Routine.
How It Worked
I love how it instantly hydrates my skin after application especially the cooling/soothing effect I get afterwards. I also love that there’s no such thing as too much product as my skin absolutely enjoys it. Sometimes I get carried away and go in with several pumps. I honestly wish I could swim in this product. What’s not to love?
In Conclusion
This lotion is easily the most popular Sake inspired product in the Japanese market. They paved the way for other brands that are now confidently formulating Sake into their products.
I absolutely enjoy this product and it has easily become a staple in my dry/dehydrated skincare routine. Even if I run out of my holy grail products, having this massive bottle in my routine will be more than enough.
So, if you’re curious about using Sake in your skincare routine or about Japanese skincare in general, I suggest you try out this product. Your skin will thank you and you will not be disappointed.
It is definitely suitable for all skin types.
