This post will be reviewing the Benton Snail Bee High Content Essence.
The first time I stumbled on this product, I was looking for an alternative to my Cosrx Snail Mucin Power Essence. As a result of the amazing benefits I got from using snail mucin in my skincare, I was open to trying other products. Naturally, the first option I found was the Benton Snail Bee Essence.
For those that are new here, I’m in my late 20s, I have dry dehydrated skin and Korean Skincare has absolutely changed my life. As such, toners/essences/serum/ampoules have become an integral part of my skincare routine. This is because they supply my skin with that much-needed hydration that it desperately needs.
After Innisfree and Cosrx, Benton is also one of those Korean Skincare brands that are very popular here in West. Their well-formulated products that are gentle enough to use on senitive skin easily became a hit. Plus, they have just about the right price point to ensure that it is readily avaliable. I mean there is really no Korean Skincare retailer that doesn’t stock Benton.
This Snail Bee line actually has about nine products including the Skin/Toner, Lotion, Ultimate Serum, Ultimate Eye Cream, Steam Cream, Essence, Mask Pack and Hydrogel Eye Patch. I’ve used the essence and I’m currently using a sample size of the Skin/Toner.
First Impressions of the Benton Snail Bee Essence
In Korean Skincare, essences are basically hydrating products that come in different consistencies. From lightweight watery essences to viscous and goopy essences like this one I’m about to review. Their role is to simply hydrate and soothe your skin depending on the ingredients.
This is a highly hydrating essence that is formulated with Snail Secretion Filtrate and Bee Venom. Yes, you heard right. The first time I heard about Bee Venom I was taken aback. But again, it’s Korean Skincare and nothing really surprises me. We’ll get into more details in the ingredient list shortly. Like I said, this is an essence that would work for all skin types if you’re particular about hydration.
According to Benton, this essence was created to tackle skin concerns like irritation, dryness, dullness, pigmentation, oil-water imbalance, particularly for oily and sensitive skin. That’s some interesting claims if you ask me. But let’s dig into the ingredient list and see if it can perform.
Aqua (Water), Snail Secretion Filtrate, Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Niacinamide, 1,2-Hexanediol, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, sh-Oligopeptide-1, Bee Venom, Plantago Asiatica Extract, Laminaria Digitata Extract, Diospyros Kaki Leaf Extract, Salix Alba (Willow) Bark Extract, Ulmus Campestris (Elm) Bark Extract, Althaea Rosea Root Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract, Beta-Glucan, Betaine, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Adenosine, Panthenol, Allantoin, Pentylene Glycol, Zanthoxylum piperitum Fruit Extract, Pulsatilla Koreana Extract, Usnea Barbata (Lichen) Extract, Polysorbate 20, Lecithin, ArginineBEN
My major reason for getting this product was because of the Snail Filtration Filtrate. It’s interesting to see that it is formulated with 88% Snail Filtration Filtrate and 2% Bee Venom. Compared to Cosrsx Snail Mucin which is 96%, it is not too shabby especially when you consider the other ingredients in the product. Snail Mucin is amazing for improving the skin’s elasticity and repairing damaged skin. If you know your skin has been through hell and back, Snail mucin is your guy.
On the other hand, Bee Venom is also great for soothing irritated skin. So when you combine Snail Mucin and Bee Venom, you have a powerhouse for repairing irritated and damaged skin.
Like in most Korean essences, Niacinamide is here to balance oil production and brighten your skin tone.
Aloe Leaf Juice and Beta Glucan are humectants that help hydrate and keep the skin well moisturized.
Another interesting ingredient is sh-Oligopeptide-1, a cell-communicating ingredient which helps in repairing the skin.
Adenosine and Allantoin help to soothe and repair your damaged skin barrier.
It is important to note that this product is Fragrance and Essential-Oil Free which makes it perfect for anyone with sensitive skin.
Texture & Consistency
My favourite thing about this product is its texture. In the world of watery toners and essences, this product shines so brightly. The only reason I haven’t repurchased is that I’m trying out so many products. It has a slightly viscous water type texture or a gel in short which spreads easily on application. It comes in a pump bottle which comes out goopy at first but absorbs fast into the skin. I literally do not need more than one or two pumps of this product. It spreads well and layers easily. If you struggle to layer products with it, you might be using too much.
Packaging & Price
Like i mentioned earlier, it comes in a 60ml pump bottle which is very easy to disperse. This is one of the few products that i don’t need to decant into a spray bottle to use. It’s also quite handy and easy to travel with. Don’t be fooled by the size though, it lasts quite a while even if you use it daily.
Review of the Benton Snail Bee Essence
When it comes to essences, I really don’t have too many expectations of them beyond hydration, brightening and soothing. While every other ingredient might be extra, I particularly lookout for the hydrating effect and how it works for my dry dehydrated skin
I typically judge an essence by how well it can hydrate my skin alone without layering any other product. There are some products that require the 7 Skins method of hydration while others need to work with other essences or serums. They’re simply not enough. But with this Benton Snail Bee Essence, I did not see the need to layer extra products with it asides my watery toner. I found the viscous texture to be just right. Not overly hydrating or underperforming, just the perfect hydration I would need for a typical Spring or Autumn day. Obviously for winter, it would need to be supplemented.
I love how it makes my skin feel smooth, hydrated and visibly brighter after application. Like every other product, you need to use it for about 6 weeks to 2 months to see any other differnce in your skin asides hydration.
I honestly cannot wait to re-introduce this product back into my routine. While I’m currently enjoying both the Skin & Lotion in the Snail Bee line, I can still feel the difference in the absence of the essence makes. When Spring comes and I want to take a break from all the layers over the winter, I’ll definitely be reaching out for this product. Think of it as a one-stop hydrating product.
If you skin is desperately crying out for hydration and you’re on a budget, you should reach out for this essence regardless of your skin type.
