This post is going to suggest 13 things you can do to keep yourself occupied while social distancing.

It is March 2020 and for some reasons, we have all found ourselves battling the COVID-19 disease. Our healthcare systems are trying their best to treat sick people. But the WHO is suggesting social distancing to avoid overhauling the healthcare system completely.

Like I mentioned in my last post on home workout equipment, I started social distancing as well as working from home since Friday. But then I realised that a lot of people will be in my shoes with zero clues on how to navigate these trying times. Yes, we have to work but after that, what else? We can’t keep working for the next two to three weeks without any form of extracurricular activities. We’re gonna burn out.

Anyways, I’ve decided to look at the positive side of this situation. I believe this is an opportunity to do all the things we as millennials have been postponing since forever. All the things that you planned to do during last Christmas or postponed until this year’s vacation, this is the time to do them now.

Here are 13 things you can asides work to prevent yourself from going crazy while social distancing at home.

13 Things To Do While Social Distancing at Home

  • Read books

You know those stacks of books on your shelf that keeps increasing but are never been read? You have plenty of time to read them now. If you are anything like me, you would have already slotted a morning reading schedule into your work from home/social distancing routine. We’re just in the middle of March and I’ve almost finished my second book. A huge improvement from last year.

  • Catch up on your pending online courses.

Again, you have plenty of time now to kick items off your to-do list. Are there online courses you have bought ages ago but never got around to finishing them? This is the time to revisit them. Whether for educational or career development, you have no excuse right now to catch up on them.

  • Finish up your writings.

If you’re a creative, blogger, scriptwriter or aspiring author, this is also the time to finish up any pending writing projects. For me, this is the period to go back to regular blogging and set my blog in motion. If you have been planning to write a book but never got around to doing it, you have time now.

  • Finish learning that skill.

Did you notice that I didn’t say you should learn a new skill? This is because millennials typically have their hands involved in so many things at the same time. They also have a habit of leaving things halfway. (I know I’m guilty.) So if you have started a YouTube channel but never got around to record and publishing videos, you have all the time now. Yes, I’m talking to myself as well.

  • Try new cooking & baking recipes

There are chances that you’ll get tired of your current menu before the social distancing is over. Now, you have plenty of time to try new recipes that tickle your fancy. Just make sure you have more than enough supplies for your experiment. To be on the safe side, make sure your pantry is stocked with your staple cooking and baking essentials. Don’t forget to consult Pinterest for an endless supply of ideas.

  • Regulate your home workout routine.

In my last post, I suggested the best home workout equipment to buy because the gym is currently off-limit. But before then, I saw a number of tweets on Twitter asking for home workout suggestions. For someone like me who already has a semblance of a home workout routine, it would be easy for me to transition from gym to home workout. So, if you’re still struggling with this, I suggest you take some time out to regulate your home workout routine. Determine how much space you have to work out in your home. Then research the kind of workout that you can consistently do effortlessly. You need something that will sustain you for the next couple of weeks.

  • Declutter and clean your home (and your life)

Has your home been a mess for a while because you have not had time for proper deep cleaning and decluttering? Oh well, now you have no excuse. Take some time out of this extended weekend to declutter your home. From your pantry to your closet, emails and social media, I’m sure you’ll find things that require decluttering. If by any chance you also need to think about your life and plan some important changes, you have the time to do so now.

  • Check up on your long-distance friends.

This is something that I started to do as well. I tried to call/message/get in touch with my few long-distance friends spread across the world. While it was good to find out how they are coping with the pandemic, it also felt good to check upon them. They’re some people in your life that you never have time to call except during the holidays. This is a good time to check on them.

  • Try Gardening

While a lot of us are so used to outdoor activities, this is the time to explore new indoor activities. Granted, gardening is not exactly an indoor activity but you don’t need to leave your house to start gardening. This is Spring which is also a good time to plant seedlings which you can harvest in between July and August.

  • Treat yourself to a Home Spa Day

Yes, we currently don’t have the luxury of going to the spa or getting that long-overdue massage. But that doesn’t mean we can’t recreate something indoors. Consult Pinterest on how to DIY a home spa day. From facials to waxing, pedicure and a bubble bath, I’m sure you would find everything you need. Bonus point if you have a partner that can give you that much-needed massage.

  • Rearrange your furniture

While I would have said you should redecorate your living room, this will require supplies except you can DIY. But rearranging your furniture will probably not cost you anything. If you feel you’re bored with the current arrangement of your furniture, you now have some time to do something about it.

  • Stream Netflix with your friends

Turns out, Google Chrome has an extension called Netflix Party where you can watch movies and chat with your friends. I honestly don’t know why it has taken Netflix forever to officially introduce this feature. But this is a great way to hang out with your friends while social distancing.

  • Join a TikTok Challenge or two

If you don’t know about TikTok, you’re definitely living under a rock. That is the only explanation. For some of us millennials (including me) TikTok makes us feel old especially since we can’t seem to learn any TikTok. This is your chance to learn one or three TikTok dances and join a challenge. You never know, it might be fun.

I’m sure with this list, you find find a few things to slot into your work from home routine while social distancing at home.
