Elf Superhydrate Moisturizer – Review

This post will be reviewing the Elf Superhydrate moisturizer.

During the Summer, I usually swap out my regular emollient/occlusive moisturizers for gel moisturizers. I’ve found out that when it gets really warm and humid, heavy layers of skincare products become quite uncomfortable. I’ve used my fair share of gel moisturizers in the past but none has compared to this Elf Superhydrate Moisturizer. I initially bought it strictly for my post on Drugstore Moisturizers for Oily Skin with no intention of using it. But alas, here I am halfway done ready for a review.

Elf Superhydrate Moisturizer - Review

First Impressions of the Elf Superhydrate Moisturizer

According to Elf Cosmetics;

A lightweight gel moisturizer that intensely hydrates, balances, and softens skin for bouncy complexion.

Your skin, renewed. This thirst-quenching gel formula delivers mega hydration while improving skin’s elasticity and moisture balance. It quickly seeps into the skin for a complexion that looks and feels smoother, softer, and plumped up. Use morning and night to reap ingredient benefits 24/7.

Ingredient List

My favourite thing about this moisturizer is the ingredient list. Listen! It is packed with so much good stuff. For a drugstore product, this moisturizer is definitely top-tier.

It has five key ingredients namely;

  • Squalane – Improves moisture balance and elasticity (which is the literally the STAR)
  • Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) – Tones and clarifies
  • Centella Asiatica (Cica) – Protects, soothes, and moisturizes
  • Snow Mushroom – Deeply hydrates and plumps skin
  • Vitamin E – Nourishes and softens skin

Did I mention that it is also alcohol, essential oil and fragrance-free? Oh yes, it is!

Texture & Consistency

The Elf Superhydrate moisturizer has quite an interesting texture. Yes, it is a gel moisturizer but instead of a lightweight soft gel, you have a gloppy thicker gel or a jelly for short. At first, I was taken back by this texture as I wasn’t sure how it would work in my routine. But then after a few uses, I found my way around it and simply just appreciated the unique texture. Think of it as a gel equivalent to an occlusive moisturizer.

Price & Avalibility

This product comes in a 48g jar and can be found in drugstores. It retails for less than $15 which isn’t too bad. Also, the size might be considered small but I honestly don’t mind it because the Summer isn’t that long anyway. So, I don’t need to use it for an extended period of time. Any season outside the Summer and I might have to layer a thicker moisturizer over it because it is simply not enough for my dry dehydrated skin.

Review of the Elf Superhydrate Moisturizer

Elf Cosmetics is a drugstore brand that a lot of people are familiar with. Unfortunately, I’m not because I don’t wear makeup and I just never got around to trying any product. This is why I was so excited when I was finally able to get my hands on this moisturizer.

Performance

I’ve been using this product for over a month now as my night-time Summer moisturizer. I layer it above the rest of my products including Tranexamic Acid, 20% Azelaic Acid and Geek & Gorgeous Retinal 0.1%. I use it as a final step alone without an occlusive moisturizer.

What I Love About It:

  • SQUALANE: I have dry dehydrated skin and squalane is one of my favourite oils. So, having it as the major ingredient is the highlight for me.
  • The ease of application: It glides on smoothly on my face, dries down quickly and doesn’t leave a tacky finish.
  • Lightweight enough for the Summer: Even with the presence of the Squalane, it doesn’t feel heavy at all and my skin still feels moisturized. It is truly a lightweight gel moisturizer.
  • Fast absorption: It absorbs quickly into my skin and still leaves a dewy finish which I absoloutely love all thanks to the Squalane. In fact, as someone that tends to be generous with skincare products, no matter how much product I use, it still abosrbs into my skin which is simply brilliant.
  • Soft and bouncy skin: By the time I wake up in the morning, my skin is soft and bouncy even without any trace of the product.

What I Don’t Love About It

Nothing to be honest. What’s not to love?!

Personal Verdict

I know I initially reserved this moisturizer for people with oily skin but I’m honestly impressed by how well it worked for my dry skin. It goes without saying that the Elf Superhydrate Moisturizer works across all skin types.

So, if you’re dehydration prone with whatever skin type, I suggest you try this product. You will not regret it.
