This post will review the Beauty of Joseon Calming Serum.
I think it’s safe to say that 2022 was the year of the Korean brand; Beauty of Joseon. Their sunscreen Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun: Rice + Probiotics SPF 50+ PA++++ went viral, and many people went crazy. I thought the virality was well-deserved because it was time for the skincare enthusiasts to look beyond well-established brands like COSRX and Klairs and appreciate other upcoming brands.
It was such a delight to see people jump on the trending sunscreen and, in the process, discover all the fantastic products the brand has to offer. If my analytics are anything to go by, many people have enjoyed learning about all the other BOJ products, most especially the four core serums, which include:
- Glow Deep Serum
- Glow Serum
- Repair Serum
- and now the Calming Serum.
It took a while for me to get my hands on the Beauty of Joseon Calming Serum because I was on a No-Buy budget, forcing myself to use up at least half of my current stash before making any new purchases.
Now that I’ve been able to get it, albeit late, I’m happy to share my thoughts.
Before we move on to the review, we must reiterate that Beauty of Joseon is a Korean Skincare brand that formulates effective skincare products with traditional Hanbang ingredients.
One of the core ingredients they use is Ginseng, which has anti-ageing benefits according to Korean traditions. Other natural ingredients used in their products include Rice, Mugwort, Propolis, Green Plum and Red Bean.

First Impressions of the Beauty of Joseon Calming Serum
According to Beauty of Joseon:
This serum was created to help soothe skin irritated by UV rays and other external factors.
We selected green tea, an iconic antioxidant, and mugwort, an herb that helps soothe skin, as the base ingredients.
We wanted to maximize the skin protection benefits through panthenol as a way to create the greatest synergy between these ingredients.
Green tea and mugwort provide moisture and soothe the skin, while panthenol acts as a moisture barrier to protect the skin from becoming irritated.
Ingredient List & Fragrance
When you think about calming products, the first thing that should come to your mind is barrier repair. This is because, more often than not, our skin barriers are usually damaged by harmful skincare practices and environmental aggressors. We can only restore them by using products with soothing ingredients.
So the key soothing ingredients in this serum are:
- 50% Green Tea
- 30% Mugwort
- 5% Panthenol
These ingredients come together to soothe the skin and restore the moisture barrier.
When using Korean Skincare, it is important to manage your expectations. These products will not magically solve all your skincare problems. Instead, they’ll ensure your skin is hydrated and your barrier intact.
In terms of fragrance, this serum is fragrance-free. It is also cruelty and essential oil-free, perfect for people with sensitive skin.

Packaging, Texture & Consistency
Like the rest of the Beauty of Joseon serums, this comes in a 30ml dropper bottle. I love it because it is hygenic, and one full dropper is more than enough for my entire face.
Also, the size helps me run through it quickly whilst still being able to enjoy it. I get bored of products quickly, so the smaller the size, the better.
This serum has a watery texture with a semi-viscous consistency which I absolutely love. It is surprisingly hydrating upon application but immediately sinks into the skin.
Like the rest of the serums, it doesn’t leave a greasy or tacky finish, making the products suitable for almost every skin type.
Price & Avaliblilty
This 30ml serum retails for $17, but you can always get it on sale for less. As a result of the brand blowing up last year, the serums are available at several online retailers.
Review of The Beauty of Joseon Calming Serum
I use this serum in the AM & PM as part of my routine. I use it alone with a hydrating toner mist in the AM, and in the PM, I use it with the Cezanne High Moist Toner and Hada Labo Gokujyun Lotion. Yes, I have dry skin, and there’s no such thing as too much hydration.

Performance
I currently use Tretinoin in my PM routine, so I’m leaning towards hydrating and barrier repair products, and this serum fits right in.
What can I say? It is simple, effective and gets the job done.
I haven’t been dealing with a compromised barrier, so I can’t say that this serum helped restore my skin barrier.
I can say that using this serum with some of the strongest actives has helped reinforce my skin barrier, making it less prone to breakouts and sensitivities.
In Conclusion,
If you’re dealing with a damaged skin barrier and looking for an affordable serum to use with the La Roche Posay Cicaplast Baume B5, the Beauty of Joseon Calming Serum is the right product for you.
