This post will be sharing my current body skincare routine for hyperpigmentation.
A few weeks ago, I began to watch body skincare/shower routines on YouTube.
I don’t know how they got to my homepage, but they did, and I caved in.
One thing I noticed was how long these body skincare routines took.
This made me realise that I wasn’t doing nearly enough for my body.
Yes, I already have my facial skincare routine locked down.
But what about my body?
Then I realised that I had unconsciously pushed it aside because I was not ready to deal with body skincare.
Especially since it is much more difficult to tackle than facial skin.
But then, during the lockdown, I started a Self-Care Sunday shower routine that I had never done before.
I began spending even more time in the shower to properly care for my body.
Naturally, this was followed up by a post-shower routine.
That is how it all began.
I gradually went back to body scrubs.
Before I knew it, I was using my leftover serums on my body.
I started with The Ordinary Mandelic Acid, which I bought but never really used.
When I was done, I started to exhaust any other old products I had left.
But then they all finished, and I realized that it was time to invest in skin care products.
Here are all the products I use for my body skincare routine for hyperpigmentation.
For those of you who are new here, I have dry/dehydrated skin from head to toe.
I also suffer from mild hyperpigmentation on my face and severe on my body.
This is due to old scars and years of neglect.
I currently use The Ordinary Skincare products for my facial hyperpigmentation and most of it has been cleared so far.
Now, I’ll be using drugstore products with actives to attempt to clear my body hyperpigmentation.
Step 1: Cleanse

I recently stumbled on Dr Vanita Rattan’s YouTube channel, which is solely focused on skincare for People of Colour (POC).
I spent an entire night binge-watching her videos because they were so insightful, particularly for dark skin.
Unlike some of the Black skincare influencers I follow, Dr Vanitta goes all out.
She even shares step-by-step routines for different skin concerns.
This is when I realized how important beta hydroxide acids (BHA), such as salicylic acid, are for hyperpigmentation.
With this new information, I knew the kind of products to buy for my skin.
First, I tried to buy Cerave, but thanks to TikTok, it was out of stock everywhere I went.
Plus, I wasn’t interested in buying the overpriced versions on eBay.
So, I went to Superdrug to browse all the drugstore products that have Salicylic Acid similar to Cerave.
Naturally, I found quite a number of them.
The next challenge was to find products that have Salicylic Acid in the first five ingredients.
This will ensure that there is a high enough percentage (typically 2%) to do the job.
After some discussion, I chose the Nip + Fab Salicylic Fix Gel Cleanser.
Then I realised how small the product was.
So I went back to grab the Clean & Clear Deep Action Cream Wash.
While I realise that most drugstore products are currently cancelled due to Hyram’s influence, I’m ready to give them a try for my body.
Who knows, I might be lucky. They’re cheap, really available and not flying off the shelves; they might just work.
Step 2: Exfoliate

When I went back to body scrubs, I started with my homemade sugar scrubs.
But then, I realised that my hyperpigmentation would take forever to clear up if I didn’t switch to scrubs with actives.
So, I went in search of them with my cleansers.
Again, after studying a lot of ingredient lists, I found scrubs with Salicylic Acid.
I was overjoyed because I particularly enjoy using scrubs to exfoliate my body; Nip+Fab actually has an entire Salicylic Acid line, so I grabbed the Salicylic Fix scrub through a sweet deal on eBay.
I couldn’t find it anywhere as well.
The size of the scrub was is about 75ml so I had to go back for a backup.
The Superdrug Deep Action Blackhead Clearing Daily Scrub looked promising, so I grabbed it.
It has Salicylic Acid as one of its five ingredients and comes in a 200ml tub.
Great deal if you ask me.
Step 3: Treat

I went through my products and realised that they were all rinse-out products.
I immediately knew that a leave-in product would come in handy.
So, I switched my Cosrx Blackhead Power Liquid, which I was already tired of using on my face, to my body.
Then, I bought this Botanical Lab Pumpkin Papaya Enzyme Daily Exfoliator, which looked sooo good!
It’s packed with Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid and Fruit enzymes to make a powerhouse exfoliator. I could not resist.
I apply the exfoliators as a first step in my post/shower routine when my body has mostly absorbed the first layer of hydration.
Step 4: Moisturize

I currently moisturize twice in my routine.
First, I put lotion in the shower, and second, I put cream on my face after my facial routine.
I have dehydrated skin, so one layer of moisture is simply not enough.
You can tell that I’m a fan of the Superdrug brands.
I currently have about three products I use in my routine.
When I can’t be bothered to spend on brands or when I can’t find what I need, I settle for Superdrug.
They somehow manage to have a variety of products.
I got the Superdrug Almond Body Milk just before the beginning of the Summer when I was switching out products.
Then I got the Cerave Smoothing Cream because of the Lactic and Salicylic Acids. I use this as a final step in my body skincare routine.
Step 5: SPF?
Unfortunately, I haven’t found an SPF I can use for my body yet.
I know I need to because of all the actives I currently use. I’ll definitely be getting a drugstore SPF because of the size and quantity.
How often is the Body Skincare Hyperpigmentation Routine?
I currently do the full routine twice a week.
Every other time, I switch up the exfoliating products with moisturising products just to balance it.
In conclusion
I’m excited about this new routine.
I wish I had started it at the beginning of the Summer but better late than never.
I’ll try and be consistent with it before winter when I have to switch up my routine again.
Hopefully I get promisingly results.
If you suffer from hyperpigmentation, do you currently have a routine for treating it?
